About Terra Nullius
In his artistic work Morten Barker examines and explores the limits on how the image distorts the reality we know. Barker creates images based on war film landscapes, which are articulated through the fictional and the documentary. Through digital manipulation and sampling of screenshots the artist creates an ambiguity in which geography, depth of field and time are blurred.
Terra nullius is a Latin expression derived from Roman Law describing land that belongs to nobody. In principle it describes territory that may be unoccupied or uninhabited and therefore may be acquired through occupation.
Terra Nulliusconsists oftwenty-four empty war landscapes. Each image is a digital montage made entirely ofscreenshots from a specific war movieranging from Sergei Eistenstein’sBattleship Potemkin(1925), to David Lean’sLawrence of Arabia(1962) and Kathryn BigelowsThe Hurt Locker(2008).
