About
The history of this island is that of a piece of the South China Sea coastline, described
by the British, who took possession of it in the mid-19th century, as a
bare rock with grassy hills and sporadic shrubby woodlands surrounding the few
villages that inhabited it. For a century, people worked to plant trees there,
particularly Massonia pines (Pinus massonia), for agricultural purposes or to stabilize the eroding terrain.
Then, this island became a rock again during World War II;
almost all the trees on the island’s hills were felled to provide fuel
during the Japanese occupation. A reforestation policy resumed after the war. []
