About Freedom or Death
Freedom or Death is a project that started with a box of negatives and transparencies that Mendel left in a friend’s garage in Johannesburg. Left in there for a long time, the box got rained on and the water caused damage to the top layers. Those photographs were taken by Mendel years before during the final years of apartheid, when he, as a witness of the uprising and mobilisation, captured the movement. The result is an excellent documentation of the highly conflictive years of the end of the Apartheid regime. It’s a project of re-engaging with the past.
