About The Atmosphere of Crime, 1957
It was 1957 and Parks, commissioned by Life magazine, was working on a series of essays about crime in America. His perspective was unique on this topic; Parks rejected the racist and classist clichs of delinquency, drug use and violence. In fact, he had an approach based on the social and economical factors that can actually be linked to criminal behaviour. As a result, The Atmosphere of Crime, 1957 presents a sophisticated essay that cinematically portrays a world nobody wants to look at. That of violence, corruption and social rejection. The images in Parks’ books are powerful and poetic, embedded in a striking aesthetic fuelled with empathy. This book contains a great selection of never-seen-before photographs from Parks’ original reportage.
