The Stupidity Paradox: The Power and Pitfalls of Functional Stupidity at Work
Condition: BRAND NEW
Format: Paperback
ISBN: 9781781255414
Overview:
Functional stupidity is a paradox at the heart of many modern organisations: a cognitive blind spot that can shield teams from disruption in the moment, yet threaten longterm resilience when risk rises. This book explores how cultures, routines, and power dynamics can cultivate a climate where the right questions go unasked, dissent is discouraged, and fashionable ideas replace rigorous evidence. Youll discover how groups rally around consensus, riskaverse rituals, and image over substanceand how these tendencies can lead to costly misjudgments, financial strain, and even systemic failure. But the same mechanisms that quieten doubt can also produce swift action, strong coordination, and harmony when used judiciously. The Stupidity Paradox offers a careful, provocative map of when stupidity serves as a practical coping strategy and when it becomes a dangerous barrier to learning. Expect accessible analysis, concrete case examples, and practical steps you can apply in meetings, boards, and everyday decision making. A mustread for managers, consultants, and professionals who want smarter, not merely faster, fixes.
What Makes This Book Stand Out:
What sets this book apart is its balanced adjudication of a controversial concept. It avoids polemics and instead presents a clean diagnostic framework: recognising the signs of functional stupidity, understanding the conditions that foster it, and designing organisational routines that preserve speed and cohesion without sacrificing critical thinking. The authors blend behavioural science with organisational design, illustrating how small changes to decision processes, governance, and feedback loops can dramatically reduce blind spots. Realworld examplesfrom crisis responses to routine project approvalsground the theory in tangible scenarios. The result is a guide that helps leaders cultivate constructive dissent, encourage reflective practice, and embed safeguard mechanisms that prevent quick wins from becoming lasting failures. Clear, insightful, and relentlessly practical, its a rare combination of rigorous research and usable wisdom.
