About The World Through My Eyes
A broad monograph devoted to Daido Moriyama, one of the preeminent names in contemporary Japanese photography along with Nobuyoshi Araki, Yasumasa Morimura, and Shomei Tomatsu. Provoke is the title of the magazine founded in 1968 by a group of Japanese photographers, graphic designers, poets, critics, and political activists. Moriyamas photography is indeed provocative, both for the form it takes (dirty, blurry, overexposed, or scratched) and for its content. The viewers experience of the photowhether it captures a place, a person, a situation, or an atmosphereis the central thrust in his work, which vividly and directly conveys the artists emotions. The approximately 200 black-and-white images sketch out an original perspective on Japanese society, especially during the period from the 1950s to the 70s, although the artist himself chose to conclude this selection with a number of photos shot in the past decade. An outstanding summary of the best projects Moriyama has pursued, in a richly printed volume.
About Daido Moriyama
Daid Moriyama is a Japanese photographer, born in 1938 in Osaka. Firstly, he studied photography before moving to Tokyo in 1961. To begin with, he worked as an assistant to Eikoh Hosoe, a Japanese photographer and filmmaker. As a result, he began to produce his own collection of photographs. Afterwards, he ended up depicting the forgotten areas and darker side of cities. Shortly after, Japan Photo-critics awarded him the New Artist Award.Hence, Moriyamas images are now known for capturing the breakdown of Japanese tradition. His work captures life during and following the American occupation of Japan after World War II. In particular the effects of industrialisation and the consequential shift in urban life. His images focus on the areas left behind in a rapidly changing city.He received the Infinity Award for Lifetime Achievement from the International Center of Photography in New York in 2004 as well as the Hasselblad Award in 2019.
